Formation of citation networks by rational players and the diffusion of ideas

چکیده
We study models of the formation of citation networks in a setting where authors/firms care about their citations and are rational. The effect of these two features on the diffusion of useful ideas in a setting with complete information about past citations leads to multiplicity of equilibria. With field-specific norms, however, uniqueness obtains. Asymmetric information about quality and strategic entry gives equilibria in which players signal quality by timing of entry. Ex post effi ciency cannot be guaranteed, but ex ante effi ciency is sometimes attainable. Imperfect information about past research with information being obtained through acquaintances, yields a preferential attachment network. ∗Department of Economics, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, Pa. 16802.. email: [email protected]. †Oxford Economic Research Associates, Oxford, UK, email:[email protected]. Valuing Indirect Citations in Citation Networks using Data Fusion
Any scientific activity requires awareness of previous related activities. Citation networks are the networks in which each document is compared as a link of a chain with its previous and next documents, and the documents with the highest number of citations are considered as the most effective ones in a domain. Most of the introduced methods use direct citations for valuing the documents. One ...
متن کاملInterdependent Security Game Design over Constrained Linear Influence Networks
In today's highly interconnected networks, security of the entities are often interdependent. This means security decisions of the agents are not only influenced by their own costs and constraints, but also are affected by their neighbors’ decisions. Game theory provides a rich set of tools to analyze such influence networks. In the game model, players try to maximize their utilities through se...

متن کاملGlobalization and the Diffusion of Ideas: Why We Should Acknowledge the Roots of Mainstream Ideas in Global Health
Although globalization has created ample opportunities and spaces to share experiences and information, the diffusion of ideas, especially in global health, is primarily influenced by the unequal distribution of economic, political and scientific powers around the world. These ideas in global health are generally rooted in High-Income Countries (HICs), and then reach Low- and Middle-Income Coun...
